Spring Wardrobe Update

I realize it’s been a little while since my last post. Things have been a little crazy and I haven’t had much time to sit down and focus. I feel like I owe you, the reader, quality content and that doesn’t always come quickly when I’m in the middle of trying to get multiple things accomplished. While the blog may go quiet every once in a while, I always make a point of curating fun fashion articles from around the web on the Barely Practical Facebook page and on my Twitter feed. If you’re just looking for great shoe or fashion inspiration, there’s also my Pinterest page or Lyst feed.

During some of my down time, I’ve been working on my spring/summer wardrobe. Normally I’ll pick up something new here or there as it calls to me, but about a month ago I had the perfect storm of sales that caused me to go on a major shopping spree.

I had already made plans to go to our local Boston Store’s Trendevous shopping event which is held every spring and fall. It’s a practical fashion show and  I always use the great coupons such as 30% off shoes. However, the potential for doing a real wardrobe update really kicked in as I discovered a 30% off Kohls coupon on my mail table the night before and received an email that everything at The Limited was going to be 50% off the next day until 2pm. Since I was at the mall anyway, additional stops at Aldo and H&M couldn’t hurt either, right?

OK, so it looks like I went completely crazy, but there’s actually a method behind my madness. While the items at the mall aren’t as unique as the pieces in the boutiques, the larger retailers have very liberal return policies. When shopping at the mall, I can truly shop with abandon and not worry about making tough decisions because most anything can go back later and I get my money back. Shopping then becomes a worry free experience that is all about the exhilaration of the hunt for a great deal and pieces that are fun and flattering.

But sooner or later it does come time to make those decisions. I needed to decide what to keep and what to return and what would work with what I already have. I don’t have the glorious walk-in closet that I’d like yet, so I laid my purchases out on my bed and started to line up shoes so I could easily see things in one place.

Several hours later I had identified what I should take back, and what additional pieces I still needed to make outfits complete. As much fun as this had been, I wondered if I could make this whole process a little more efficient. I just don’t have the time that I used to nor do I remember what I do and don’t have at home. So I decided to try and experiment with some closet management apps.

I’m currently trying out several different ones and you can look forward to reviews over the next couple of weeks. If you’d like a preview, you can check out my guest post on Modly Chic which talks about the vacation packing feature of StyleBook.

Fashion in Bloom

Spring is finally here.  My tulips and daffodils are blooming and if you’ve been reading the blog or following along on the Barely Practical Facebook page, you’ll know I’m all about floral right now.

Last weekend’s fashion show at the Green Living festival at Milwaukee’s Mitchell Park Domes was the perfect emodiment of what I’ve been feeling.  The show conjured images of whimsical fairy royalty gathering amongst the flowers.  Timothy Westbrook’s designs made from recycled materials were the perfect choice for the festival and Alexis Rose once again styled them for the setting.  Timothy and Alexis Rose have partnered together before for their fashion show at the Pfister and this show proves once again that they make a great team.

I appreciate they that took a risk by having one of the model’s faces covered, similar to what we see in many Alexander McQueen shows.  What could have felt out of place, seemed more like the dark fairy who balanced out the group.  Another trend I saw in the show was the use of ear cuffs which I thought added to the enchanted feel of the show.

Finally I have to also note the makeup done by the Beauty by Essentials team.  It added to the rich look of the outfits and was uniquely perfect for the whole experience.  Some of my favorite pictures from the show are below and you can see the rest in the Green Living Facebook album.

Weekend Floral

If you’ve been watching the Barely Practical Facebook page, you’ll know that I’m really into floral right now.  I think it’s because it’s finally starting to warm up and some of my plants are starting to bud.

I’m not always good about consciously picking up casual clothes.  Even when shopping for florals, I instinctively go for pieces such as the ones on my spring florals post.  However, I do appreciate something easy and comfortable and wanted to expand my casual pieces without resorting to jeans and t-shirts.

On a recent shopping trip I picked up a couple of pieces from H&M including some floral pants and a soft speckled pink sweater. I especially liked the spring sweater as the back was a semi-sheer fabric that kept the outfit from being too basic.

Since I’m only 5’1, pants can be a problem for me. These weren’t too bad, but I opted to roll them up anyway to show off my shoes. A cropped look is a great way to feel like it’s getting warmer and can be flattering too. Just make sure the bottom isn’t wider than the top (always say no to wide leg crop pants) and they don’t fall in the middle of your calf.

The final touches were accessories and shoes. I chose a chunky Nine West platform that gave me some extra height but kept the overall look casual. For jewelry I wanted something a little more modern so the outfit wasn’t too girly. My Prabal Gurung for Target bracelet and a ring from my jewelry box finished things off.

Spring Florals

They say that April showers bring May flowers. We’ve had plenty of rain this spring, but I don’t feel like waiting until May to brighten up my wardrobe with some florals. There are so many cute pieces from bags to dresses to dreamy shoes.  Is there floral in your future?

Spring Shoe It Lyst

I can’t resist the siren’s call of a new pair of shoes.  For me those are the unique, standout from the crowd shoes that will make a statement.  While not necessarily something you would wear every day, these are shoes you would wear over and over again throughout the years when you want to add some spice to your outfit.

One of the places that I love to look for shoes is the social curation site Lyst. I thought I’d share some ideas for your closet as well as some of my favorite shoes for the new season – the ‘It Lyst’ if you will.  Which ones are your favorite?

Designer Kelvin Haydon

This past Saturday I had the opportunity to view a show featuring designer Kelvin Haydon.  I found Kelvin’s designs to be fun and different from what you see in many stores.  Many had a sexy edge that would make any woman stand out from the crowd.

I saw several themes amongst the designs coming down the runway.  Several dresses featured a whimsical use of buttons in various colors.  They were cute and flirty and felt like they were made for fun.

Another set of dresses incorporated mesh panels.  I thought some worked very well as he did a great job of balancing sexy and classy.  However, I felt some of the mesh panels on the other dresses were a bit precarious with their placement and would be tough to wear.

A third theme was an almost space age use of plastic.  I thought this was really fun, especially when he incorporated some of the glittery colored pieces.  They’d look great with some of the translucent jewelry and lucite heels that are currently out for spring.

I talked to Kelvin briefly after the show and he hopes to have some pieces in boutiques later this year.  I’ll post updates on my Facebook page as I hear more.

Some of my favorite looks from the show are featured below, and you can find a full set of pictures from the Kelvin Haydon show on the Barely Practical Facebook page.

Spring Trend – Eyelet

Eyelet was a trend spotted on several runways for spring. While it can seem girlish, I have to admit that after a long winter of wearing leather and fur, it feels refreshingly feminine.

I fell in love with a floral eyelet dress recently at The Limited. The fit-and-flare shape was perfect as it emphasizes my curves while hiding a stomach that isn’t as flat as I’d like. I decided to use it as the base for the outfit I wanted to put together to visit my family for Easter. I put together shots from several angles below and of course my cat insisted on being in one of them.

The Limited Eyelet Dress

The dress is sleeveless and will be great by itself in summer. However, for our cool spring I decided to layer on a white sweater. Because a sweater can quickly add bulk I added a simple skinny belt to keep my waist visible.

The other necessity for me was a colorful heel that picked up the mint embroidery in the dress. Many runways showed kitten heels with the longer hem dresses, but I’m only 5’1 which means that kitten heels would have just made me look frumpy. To add some length to my frame, my new Vince Camuto Adrien heels were the perfect choice.

I decided to play up the 50′s element of the outfit by adding on a vintage hand-painted bag that I picked up from FashionFarmBoy. Finishing touches to pull everything together included a shell floral necklace from The Limited, a soft pastel cocktail ring from Aldo, and some simple pearl earrings from my jewelry box. The upstairs of my grandfather’s house provided the perfect backdrop for some of the pictures with it’s selection of vintage furniture .

In the past I’ve blogged about digital magazines  and some of their new features.  Besides the well known big publications, there is a whole world of fashion magazines available in digital-only format. One of the new magazines to arrive is FM – FashionableMags.

For their first issue, FM focused on style makers who are behind the scenes of the fashion you love such as designers, stylists, bloggers, and event planners.  I was proud to be chosen as one of the featured style makers for their first issue and had a full spread that featured my blog. In addition, I contributed an article for them called Let’s Dance which focuses on why you need that new pair of shoes.

FM kicked off the release of their first issue in style.  I highlighted some of the style makers and a great shoe shot from party guests below.  You can see our full FM release party album on the Barely Practical Facebook page.

Lucite Heels

Lucite heels have been around for quite some time. Often times found on strippers or decorated with blinking lights and adorning the feet of an adventorous girl in a big city club, they’ve been the domain of late nights and wild times.

The new trend of lucite heels still leaves plenty of room for fun, but now can also hold it’s own in the daylight. A classy shoe with a simple wedge or stacked heel made of lucite can now be a staple for the office.

Last weekend I attended Boston Store’s Trendevous fashion show and fell in love with the Lana wedge from MICHAEL Michael Kors. It was everything I was wanting in a lucite heel that I could wear to work. I work in a corporate office so need to keep things looking professional.

Michael Michael Kors sandal

This shoe was perfect as it was a simple, comfortable leather sandal that I could wear all day, but the lucite wedge gave it a modern flair. It also didn’t hurt that Trendevous attendees received a 30% off shoe coupon. The show itself is a great event that happens twice a year – to learn more you can read my more in-depth account of the Fall 2012 Boston Store Trendevous show.

So now that I’ve covered work, I’ll eventually need a pair for nighttime. I think something a bit more edgy would be fun. Maybe even one of the colored ombre lucite heels.

I picked out a couple of my favorite lucite heels that I’ve seen out there for work and play. Which ones are your favorite?

A Little Bit of Lace

I had the opportunity to attend the Haute List fashion show last weekend at the beautiful Milwaukee Art Museum.  It was the perfect setting for an outfit shot so I took advantage before the show started.

When picking my outfit for the show, I wanted something modern, but still with a bit of whimsy.  I had recently fallen in love with a pair of pants at H&M  and found a lace tunic which really picked up the needlework-like design on the pants.  Multiple patterns can be a bit risky when putting together an outfit and when doing so I try to look for complimenting patterns or contrasting colors.

To balance off the black and white, I opted to accent with red.  Some suede ankle strap sandals from Nine West, along with a red lip, and a black and red bag from Lela Boutique helped to pop out the color.  I looked for red earrings, but couldn’t find what I was wanting so opted with black oval drop earrings that I found at Macy’s.

Red lipstick

Red lipstick can be a bit intimidating and the important thing to remember is to find a shade that works with your skin tone.  I have a lot of red undertones in my skin so I need a red that has a blue base versus orange so I don’t look clownish.
